Per a recent article in the New York Times, popular wisdom may now be off the mark in thinking that housing is a “good investment.” Most people have believed for their entire lives that buying a house made good financial sense. You need a place to live anyway, you get a tax break on the interest, and most importantly houses appreciate in value over the long term, like stocks (but unlike virtually every other “consumer” good, which of course depreciates in value).

But apparently there is a new reality: Given the hangover from the housing bubble, evidence now suggests that housing prices will not significantly appreciate for a very long time, particularly in those areas that were most susceptible to the bubble.

Why is this important? Well, many buyers of real estate do so for the investment. If housing is no longer considered to be a good investment, then many of those potential buyers will seek to invest their money elsewhere. And fewer buyers will translate into continuing downward pressure on buyers. Which in turn will make housing a less profitable investment. In other words, this cycle will feed on itself, depressing home values further in the process.

They describe Agent Reboot as “power-packed” and “low cost” which pretty well sums up our whole business model so you know we’re down with that. It’s an event local real estate agents looking to learn about new developments in the industry so it presents a great opportunity to introduce ourselves to agents who haven’t heard of us, yet. And maybe we’ll get to spread the gospel of lower commissions!

We enjoyed our experience so much [using Craig to help us sell our house FSBO] we contacted Craig when we were ready to buy our next house. We worked with Craig through both his law firm and through WALaw Realty. Craig helped tremendously through the negotiation process. He kept us apprised of everything that was going on and answered question after question we threw at him. I have and will continue to tell people I know and meet who are ready to sell or buy to contact Craig. Telling them they will not only have a great experience but they could save a tremendous amount of money on your purchase or sale. With the money we saved we were able to pay all closing costs, buy points toward our loan, and still had some money left over. If you are planning on buying or selling a home I highly recommend using Craig Blackmon.

We especially appreciated the last minute efforts and changes to make sure our house closed on time, and feeling represented — not pressured. All the best to both of you.

We’re excited to announce that we’ve been nominated for the prestigious 2010 Innovator Awards awarded by Inman News at the annual Real Estate Connect conference in San Francisco. Along with several impressive companies we’ve been nominated in the Most Innovative Real Estate Brokerage category.

Nominations are open to the public and winners are chosen by the Inman News editorial board. This year, for the first time, there is a “People’s Choice” Innovator Award as well so we need your vote so we can win twice!

Click here to register (choose the “limited access” option to register for free) then click here to vote.

Inman News prides itself as “the leading source of independent real estate news, information, advice, research, opinion and commentary for industry professionals and consumers alike” and they’ve been handing out the Innovator Awards annually since 1997. The awards go to forward-thinking individuals and businesses and past winners include Google Earth, Trulia, Redfin, New York Times Real Estate, Coldwell Banker Real Estate, RE/MAX International, E*Trade, E-Loan, Lending Tree.

It’s a big honor for us to be nominated and especially cool since it comes on the heels of an awesome article they about us last April. You have to be a dues-paying member to read the whole article so we’ll sum it up for you. The reporter looked all across the company to see if anybody else had a business model that combined the traditional strengths of a top notch real estate brokerage with the practical advice and counsel of a real estate law firm all for a low flat fee. Sure enough, we’re the first and only ones to do it and that, my friends, is the definition of innovation!

This nomination is right in line with our mission statement which makes it all the more satisfying. WaLaw Realty - Changing the way people buy and sell real estate!

Down. At least per the “really smart” people at Goldman Sachs. I use quotes because I imagine these same people were singing an entirely different tune two or three years ago — while shorting the market at the same time! So its not like they’ve got a lot of crediblity these days. That said, the Seattle market has historically trailed the larger national market. Since the larger market appears to have bottomed out, it makes some sense that Seattle would continue to decline for some period. Time will tell…

Marc Holmes represented us in the purchase of a property that involved stubborn sellers and challenging negotiations. Without his negotiating acumen, the deal may have fallen through. Marc always made himself available during the drawn-out process and answered all emails and phone calls from us promptly. He reviewed all contracts and stipulations relevant to the purchase and sale agreement as well as the escrow and settlement statements in a timely fashion. We felt extremely secure with our purchase as Marc demonstrated throughout negotiations that he only has our best interests in mind, which may not have been the case had we dealt with a regular real estate agent. As first-time home buyers, we highly recommend the services that Marc and WaLaw Realty can provide.

We’ve Moved! That’s right, we’re now in new and larger office space at 6th & Virginia. We still have a few pieces of furniture to buy and the walls are screaming for artwork (or sweet posters of 80’s hair bands) but, all in all, we love it. And the best part is, we now have room for additional staff. Did I mention we’re hiring?

So what’s with the absolute zero reference you ask? Well, as we all know, absolute zero is the theoretical temperature at which all molecular motion ceases and, at least theoretically, pure substances can form perfect crystals. However, the laws of thermodynamics state that absolute zero cannot be reached because this would require a thermodynamic system fully removed from the rest of the universe.

Nonetheless, our research and development division has taken it upon itself to disprove the naysayers. Accordingly, the photo below should demonstrate definitively that absolute zero is achievable and that perfect crystals do exist.

But Marc, what pure substance is capable of such perfection? Why, caffeine free Diet Pepsi, of course.

But, Marc, that’s just a fridge with cans of exploded soda in it.

No, it’s not. It’s the only thermodynamic system on earth capable of full removal from the known universe. Under no circumstances did I or anyone in our employ put cans of soda in a fridge with the temp setting set too low. We’re educated professionals over here and that would never happen.

The only plausible explanation is that the former tenants left behind a supremely powerful device that they feared and, for good reason. I mean really, did you see what it did to those cans?

So, feel free to stop by our new digs and check out our kickin’ new fridge. But call ahead if you’ll want a cold beverage as inter-universal soda retrieval and serious defrosting may be required.
