Is Now a “Good Time to Buy” a House in Seattle or Elsewhere? Not Generally Speaking…

I just authored a post over on Seattle real estate blog Rain City Guide (“It’s a Good Time to Buy”? Not until 2013…) taking a crack at that age-old real estate question: Is now a good time to buy?  In a nutshell, generally speaking, no. It’s not a good time to buy a home or condo in Seattle or anywhere else in the US.

NOT A GOOD TIME TO BUY A HOME: SOME EXCEPTIONS APPLY

But, as I point out at the end of the piece, it really depends on your personal home buying situation.  If there is some external reason nudging you into the real estate market — current house too small, tired of getting somebody’s permission when you want to paint, etc. — then now actually is a decent time to buy.  After all, regardless of how long interest rates remain low, the fact of the matter is they are historically low right now.  And regardless of any further decline in the housing market, prices have fallen significantly.  Particularly if you’re able to buy with a long-term time line for expected ownership, this actually may be a good time to buy.
